Is it possible a scan to STEP or Parasolid can be made available for designing to? The STL has too many faces for SolidWorks to open as a solid body and can only be opened as a graphics body which is useless for SW.
we can try to decimate faces on the file more but due to how its scanned you cannot easily converted to a STEP or Parasolid from the original pointcloud. If you have access to Geomagic it can do the conversion for you.

Does this have to be 100% printed? My concept uses some carbon fiber rods, cut to length and glued into printed parts, is this OK?
As long as the 3D printing is incorporated you can use other materials as well. If we demonstrate the part you’ll need to supply to additional materials and assemble yourself.
