Convenient one handed docking solution for iPhone 6 in the lower forward storage area of the MK7 Series (2015 & 2016) VW Golf. Perfect for use with 2016 and newer models that integrate Apple's CarPlay system where a physical connection with the Lightning connector is necessary but viewing the phone's display is not. It's also possible to close the lid of the storage while the phone is in the dock for security or just a clean look.
It has been tested and used with the 2016 Golf GTI (Left Hand Drive) and an iPhone 6 without a case. From a visual inspection of other 2015/2016 VW Golf models, I believe the dock should fit well in the other MK7 Golf variants as well. Although not tested, an iPhone 6-S may fit in the dock as it is only slightly larger. Also, the iPhone 5 & 5-S may work as well but will have a sloppier fit side to side because of the phones narrower dimensions. In this case, adding shims on the side of the docking craddle would help. If you have a case on your phone, it will most probably not work; at least not without extensive modifications.
I sanded, primed, and painted mine with Krylon Flat Black for a smooth finish. Also, in the dimensioning, I allowed for a lining of adhesive backed felt in the docking tray that I bought at the local hobby shop for noise and scratch protection. It is designed to be used with a 90 degree Lightning cable that can be found on Amazon - StarTech.com 1m 3-Feet Angled Apple 8-Pin Lightning to USB Cable for iPhone, iPod and iPad (USBLT1MBR) - http://amzn.com/B00HNX1S30. In order to secure the dock in the storage area, a small screw is set into the back wall of the bin in an area that is normally not visible (very dark and difficult angle to see).

*** Note - One purchaser of this model experienced fit issues of a gap on the front lip of the dock which I don't understand why yet - maybe got a part with warpage? Others, to my understanding, have not had this issue. Based on this I wanted to confirm the that there would be a good fit across the MK7 Golf family and that there are not slight differences in the bins of the various models. I took my unit out of my car and went to the local VW Dealer and fit the Dock in several other cars. Cars tested were:
Confirmed Fit -
2016 Golf SportWagen TSI S 1.8L
2016 Golf GTI with 6 Speed manual DSG Automatic Transmission with Tiptronic
2016 Golf 1.8T
While I cannot test every Golf variant, I (and my Dealer) are quite certain the unit should fit well in all MK7 Left Hand Drive Golf models.
While most likely could be made to function as the bin does slide into the area, but it is definitely not a proper fit -
2016 Jetta 1.8T Automatic Transmission
2016 Passat 1.8T SE
