This summer the IDSA International Design Conference has announced a competition for their launch day. The challenge is to design a 3D Printed car to launch down a ski-slope track at the conference.
To enter you have to design a car using their supplied wheels and axle and send the STEP file to Zach Kaplan of Inventables (zach@inventables.com) by August 12. The top 10 designs, based on aesthetics and the utilization of unique 3D printing attributes, will be printed and launched down the ski-jump. The contest will be judged based on best flight, best aesthetics, and most spectacular crash. The top prize is a 3D Printer! For more information check here.
That’s strange that they don’t say WHAT KIND of 3D printer is offered as the prize. How can anyone spend all that time putting together a contest and then forget to mention the most important part?!! HAHAHA! =D
Very true.
And a STEP file, yeah that fits right in with us Shapeways users. NOT!
What’s so foreign about a STEP file? I’ve worked in Rhino, Solidoworks and ProE, all do STEP files as easily as an STL or anything else? STL’s are not generally native CAD files.
And most Shapeways users are not CAD designers in the traditionally used sense of the phrase…
Blender, Tinkercad, Sculptris, Sketchup – do they export to STEP?
It may be true that ‘most Shapeways users’ don’t use a full-fledged 3D cad program. But it would be safe to say that most Shapeways designers do. STEP, or STL if you prefer, is the de-facto standard in rapid prototyping. And yes, the full-blown version of Sketchup does export to STEP.
STEP and .stl are completely different. Either one may be the standard for rapid prototyping but not both.
And most Sketchup users on Shapeways do not have the Professional version imo so also not relevant.
The picture at the top is of an UP Mini 3D printer, which inventables sells on their site for $899. I’m only assuming, but that is what my guess would be as the 3D printer prize.
Wow nice competion but they forget to mention that what kind of 3D printer is given in prize.
well AUTO CAD lovers will winning this competion because they know how to design a 3D car. wilmington nc property management companies
