Product Description

This is a nominally 2mm : 1ft scale model of a GWR diagramme N28/N29 coal wagon. It is my first effort at CAD and 3D printing so I have kept things fairly simple. There is no integral chassis (it is meant to be fitted onto a Parkside Dundas 12' wheelbase chassis kit, although no locating key has been added to the underside of the floor to make this easy) and I have not added rivet, door catch or door handle detail. The dimensions are based on ones I determined while scratch-building a closely related model (diagramme N23) in polystyrene sheet materials with little modification, and are not scaled exactly to the design measurements. I expect to refine the design in the light of the experience I gain from this experiment, ordered in frosted ultra-detail plastic as recommended by a fellow modeller. Update: as delivered in frosted ultra-detail plastic, the long sides have bowed outwards more than I feel can be passed off like real-world wear and tear of the prototypes in service. Vertical surfaces, especially on the outside, have a certain amount of texture in which detail as fine as rivets will be largely lost. I haven't yet fitted to a chassis or painted, to see how this turns out. Conclusion: needs to be redesigned with thicker side walls, or with webs across the inside to maintain the shape while the polymer cures (or dries) as I presume it continues to do for a while after printing. I would then hope to cut away the interior supporting webs before painting, or perhaps afterwards, as painting may also promote warping.
