Product Description
The starboard/right mandible of the five foot Falcon has tons of details (greeblies), and this perforated half-cylinder is a prominent one.

It’s often called a “Kettenkrad” greebly, because the original component came from a 1:9 scale kit of a World War II German Kettenkraftrad motorcycle gun tractor, made by Italian
model firm ESCI. The Star Wars shooting miniatures were covered in such model kit parts, from tanks to race cars.

Note: if you'd like to get this greebly sprued with four other greeblies, I have that available as a separate product. And if you'd like your landing gear to have properly perforated discs, I have those available too!

Bandai's parts.

The 1:72 “Perfect Grade” Falcon kit has excellent replicas of all the movie model’s parts, but Bandai's reproduction of this particular Kettenkrad component lacks perforations. And the light airy look of the tiny holes is pretty important to the model’s overall appearance. The Bandai part is also rather thick, whereas the original part was so thin it looked like sheet metal.

It’s straightforward to drill out the Bandai part with a very fine bit, to get the tiny round holes. But the narrow slots at the top and bottom, which also should be open, are a bit more fiddly to cut out.

A 3D print.

Many model makers will want to add these holes for extra accuracy. But if you lack the tools or the inclination to do it, or if your part gets damaged, here’s a 3D printed replacement.

It's a fairly accurate part and will just drop in, though you’ll need epoxy or superglue/ACC. I didn't include all the clip-in points that the Bandai part has. I did make it much thinner than the Bandai component, in order to be closer to scale than the original Falcon model. That means that this part is crazy-thin and thus super fragile! Be really careful installing it. And just as careful cleaning it - the tiny holes will most likely still contain support wax, and need to be carefully cleaned out with hot running water before painting.

However, even the best 3D printing processes available today aren’t quite as smooth and sharp as Bandai’s moulding technology. I've also thickened the part slightly, especially where all the holes are, for improved printability and sturdiness. And I've modelled a slight chip at the top of the part, since the original Falcon part has this damage.

Please read the following if you're interested in this item.

This accurizing part is not a mass-market commercial product. I made it for my own use, and have put it here in case it's of interest to someone else. Possibly you, since you’re reading this.

This is a component for the serious model maker who wants to build a more accurate miniature. It requires finishing. If you don't want to trim, file, sand, and glue, then this isn't the part you're looking for!

The part is tiny, and easily broken. It pushes the limits of today's 3D printers. The detail in the digital previews is all there, but it won't always be visible at the miniscule sizes that this scale requires!
