Product Description
North Staffordshire Railway 20 ton Goods Brake Van, diagram 20, built from 1890 onwards.

This is an accurate 7mm scale model based on details in in GF Chadwick (1993) "North Staffordshire Wagons" ISBN 1 874103 15 1, photo of no 5421 built in 1913 and Craven Bros / Stoke Works GA drawing dated 1908. Most of these 20 ton brakevans lasted into LMS days after 1923, but we have no evidence any survived into the BR era after 1948.

This is a 3D printed body and underframe only. As builder, to complete the body you will need to add a plastic or brass removable roof and chimney for the stove inside. Thin wire is needed  for door handles and handrails, just drill holes at the dimples all round the body, the long side rails sit on short stanchions along the body side and are seperate from the vertical hand rails at each end. The characteristic outside brake handle and column is provided in the correct position but small sprues need snipping carefully away from the handle itself. Lamp irons can be made from FB strip, slots are provided in the correct positions, one on each end, three on each side. In case you're wondering, the round holes in the ends feature in the GA drawings and on photographs, but we're not sure what they were for, they would have been covered with a piece of heavy cloth on the inside to keep out draughts. Glaze the windows with your favourite clear material. Don't forget to install a guard; certainly some vans had small seats either side of the verandah so he could be sitting down or leaning out the side or over the end.

To help you to create the underframe, the floor is marked for installing W irons or compensation units set at 10’ 0” wheelbase. Source and fit spoked 3ft 1in diameter wagon wheels, NSR oil axleboxes with long springs and secondary suspension links, vee hangers and a clasp brake system operated by an L shaped bellcrank from the brake column, and round base wagon buffers. Long lower stepboards and short steps under the doors will need to be made, small dimples beneath the solebar can be drilled out to take round vertical brackets made from stout wire. Couplings were three links; as far as is kown the NSR never had any vacuum fitted brake vans.

Thoroughly degrease all surfaces before painting. Livery: NSR = goods brown (suggest use GWR Indian Red). LMS = grey. Letters white.
For 3D modelling details on a 4mm scale version of this Brake Van please see the RMweb topic at: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/64692-nsr-brakevan-in-4mm-scale-by-3d-printing/This item is listed in only one material: we are very confident of the excellent surface finish and structural strength of Smooth Fine Detail Plastic (aka "FUD"). We do not offer models in PA12 Grey nor Versatile Plastic because, while good for many model applications, they do not lead to the level of detail possible with this design.

Modelling the "Knotty"? Please consider joining the NSR Study Group: http://www.nsrsg.org.uk/ We have detailed plans of these Cravens vans that will enable a really accurate model to be built.
