Product Description
LMS 6 ton Meat Van - a pair of body ends & buffers only - 7mm scale (1:43)

LMS 6 ton ventilated meat van corrugated ends to enable you to build a very unusual O gauge model with twin vents rather than the usual single vent.  The ends suit two LMS van diagrams which are an ideal companion to the readily available Parkside kits (esp their own LMS Meat Van kit PS18). The designs are described in RJ Essery's "An Illustrated History of LMS Wagons Volume 1" on page 100:
- LMS diagram 1821 Meat Van of which 66 were built at Derby in 1930 to lot 497. It seems most likely they ran on a 9'0" wheelbase vacuum fitted 4 shoe underframe identical to that under diagram 1670 (pp98-99 of Bob Essery's book).
- LMS diagram 1822 Meat Van of which 34 wre built at Derby in 1930 to lot 498. These were quite different below the solebar, running on a passenger-specification 10'0" wheelbase underframe with 3' 6.5" coach wheels and, we assume, 8-shoe clasp brakes and a short hand lever each side like diagram 1830 ventilated vans (pp34-5 of the book).
No close-up photographs of complete vans are known - unless you know different, we'd like to see one! But a distant photograph of a diagram 1822 van in a train in Scotland shows that in grey livery the LMS" was not spaced out like the photos of diagram 1870 vans, but fitted on the door like conventional vent vans, just above the horizontal handle, with "MEAT" above it.
No numbers are known except for 296698, as this body is grounded as a store in a good state of preservation at the Aln Valley Railway, Longhoughton, and pictures of it can be found on the internet, e.g. at: https://www.ws.rhrp.org.uk/ws/WagonInfo.asp?Ref=8668
.  However it is not clear whether this van body came from a diagram 1821 or 1822 vehicle. At least two other grounded bodies are known to exist, near Cheddar and near Monmouth.

You will receive two ends, with buffer stocks (no heads), they are supplied as a pair to keep printing costs down. You will need to provide all other parts to make a van, we recommend using Parkside kit PS09 (LMS Ventilated Van Corrugated Ends)  as a basis. The ends are a straight swap for the single-vent ends in the kit and enable a diagram 1821 vehicle to be built fairly easily on a 9'0" wheelbase 4-shoe vacuum fitted underframe as provided by Parkside. Or maybe you can build up your own body from spares and left-overs from other Parkside kits, ABS models, Freightman, or what-have-you. For a diagram 1822 van you will also need to build the 10'0" wheelbase underframe from scratch, with carriage sized wheels, suspension and brakes as described above.  If you like building 7mm scale LMS kits you'll probably already know where to get the right parts.

Separate the parts carefully with a razor saw or snips, then clean thoroughly to remove any release agent or support wax. An ultarasonic cleaner is recommended, but do not get the parts too hot or they may warp. Please spray with a filler primer if necessary and then paint thinly to preserve the detail.

This item is listed in two materials, please check the properties of each one before ordering; we are very confident of the excellent surface finish and structural strength of Smooth Fine Detail Plastic (aka "FUD") and Smoothest Fine Detail ("FED") would be even better. We have test printed in PA12 Grey and found it lacks detail around the ventilators so discontinued this material. We do not offer models in Versatile Plastic.
