Product Description
LNWR 6 ton Refrigerator Van, set of body sides and ends only - 7mm scale (1:43)

A set of parts to build a London & North Western Railway 6ton refrigerator van to diagram 46, as built from 1884 to 1911. The model is based on Earlestown drawings found on pages 78 to 81 of C Northedge C (2011) “LNWR Wagons Vol 2” ISBN 978 1 905184 83 5 and accompanying photograph of no 66217. Some of these vans lasted into LMS days post 1923.

You will receive two sides and two ends, supplied as a set to keep printing costs down, please separate them from the sprues very carefully e.g using a razor saw. You will need to provide a floor and roof from brass or plastic sheet, plus some internal reinforcement to make a rigid body. An underframe can be put together from ABS whitemetal components (or possibly leftovers from other kits),  LNWR axleboxes, vacuum brakegear and buffers need to be matched to a photograph of the van chosen to model as these varied. Holes are provided for four horse hooks to be made using wire. Rectangular ice tanks need to be mounted on the roof at each end and a ladder provided at each end using the holes and moulded brackets on the right hand panel.  Four lamp irons are needed on each end, these can be made from brass or FB strip inserted into the rectangular slots provided. The solebars are supplied half thickness (to keep costs down by reducing the machine printing volume) , so behind each one you will need to provide a strip of brass or plastic 1mm x 6.4mm onto which the W irons, V hangers, etc can be mounted and it may be best to build a sub-assembly for these that fits behind the solebars. If you like scratch or kit building in 7mm scale you'll probably already know where to get the correct bits and your preferred way of constructing an underframe!
Thoroughly degrease all surfaces before painting. Please note that, apart from slightly widened plank lines. the side detail is dead scale, not exaggerated such as found on some 3D models, so please paint very thinly for best results!
Livery: LNWR = white body with grey and/or black. Letters black or possibly red.

This item is listed in two materials, please check the properties of each one before ordering; we are very confident of the excellent surface finish and structural strength of Smooth Fine Detail Plastic (aka "FUD") and Smoothest Fine Detail ("FED") would be even better. We have test printed in PA12 Grey and found it lacks detail in the definition of plank lines and ironwork, so discontinued this material. We do not offer models in Versatile Plastic.
