Product Description
The North Staffordshire Railway had a very distinctive chair in its signalboxes from the earliest days in the mid 19th century, right up to the 1970s. They had tapering panelled sides with windows so the signalman could see the line from a sitting position, protected from draughts. Four are known to be preserved: at the National Railway Museum, the Foxfield Steam Railway, the Churnet Valley Railway and one recently acquired by Buckinghamshire Railway Museum. The chairs were banned following an accident report which accused the "Knotty" of providing chairs that were too comfortable, leading its signalmen to risk losing concentration on their job. But many survived for decades. Having sat in a couple, they are remarkably comfortable. This model is an accurate copy of the one at Foxfield, on display in the booking hall, but there are slight detail differences between all four.
