Product Description
Aren't these lights inaccurate?

I made these originally for my DeAgostini Falcon, and thought I'd revise them for the Bandai PG Falcon, just in case someone wants them. But note that the 1977-era Falcon, after which the Bandai PG product is based, did not have these lower-saucer red warning lights. They first appeared on the ESB Falcon set in 1980 and have been carried through to subsequent full-sized sets and CGI models.

So don't buy these if you want a Bandai 1:72 Falcon that's perfectly screen-accurate to 1977! Or if you want something that's accurate to the shooting miniatures, because the red lights were on the full-sized set and never appeared on either the five foot or 32" models.

Anyway. A bunch of these warning lights are installed across the underside of the 1980 and later full-sized versions of the Falcon. They appear to be there as reminders for people not to bang their heads or something. And they look suspiciously like grey PVC roof ventilation covers for household sewage pipes, fitted out with red light bulbs.

Some other people's interpretations of this part don't include the flange at the base. I do because a flange is definitely visible in certain shots. However, it's entirely possible that some of the actual set decorations had flanges and some didn't. Who knows?

Light sizes

These details are 1.7mm in diameter at the wider point of the tube (not at the flange). Judging by my calculations and analysis of ESB set photos, on the Bandai Falcon these should actually be about 1.4mm in diameter. So these prints are very slightly overscale, but that's a compromise to make them printable using the Shapeways "Frosted Detail" process. It's also why the light slots are narrower than they were on the prototype – I couldn't make them any wider and have them pass Shapeways' printing tests.

Preparation.

You'll probably need to clean out residual wax from inside the tubes, as the slots are really tiny. I recommend very hot running water and a fine wire. Just put a sieve or something over the drain – you don't need to lose these tiny parts while washing them! I would then paint them black to block light before a final coat of whatever you're using as the Falcon body colour. Just go really light and easy on the paint, as the slots can easily fill up.

To save money the lights have been attached to a single grid-like sprue. It's probably easiest to cut the lights off using sprue snippers. These can be risky for brittle 3D-printed acrylic like this, but in this case the parts are bigger than the sprues and should clip just fine.

The parts have a hole in the centre that'll easily accommodate a 0.75mm fibre optic for lighting. The hole is almost big enough to hold a 1mm fibre, but I couldn't quite make it printable at that diameter. So you could carefully drill out the opening if you want to fit 1mm fibres.

I've included 20 warning lights in this product, though the actual ESB set appeared to have 18. So there are two to account for breakage, or for installation of any extra lights you might want.

These accurizing parts are not mass-market commercial products. I made them for my own use, and have put them here in case they're of interest to someone else. Possibly you, since you’re reading this.

These are components for the serious model maker who wants to build a more accurate miniature. They require a lot of fiddling and careful installation. If you don't want to trim, file, sand, and glue, then these aren't the parts you're looking for!

The parts are tiny, and easily broken. They push the limits of today's 3D printers. The detail in the digital previews is all there, but it won't always be visible at the miniscule sizes that this scale requires!
