This is my favourite type of sailing ship (but don't ask me why - it just
is). The caravela de armada, also known as a round caravel, is not only larger than most other ships of the type, but also has a square foresail, whereas most caravels are lateen-rigged only. Round caravels appeared around the turn of the 16th century, and were used as warships by the Portugese. These ships had hulls with multiple gun decks and deep draughts, very similar to their direct descendent, the galleon. In fact, the only distinction between many early galleons and round caravels was the sail plan.
