Product Description
A pentaconter is a ship with fifty oars, usually in a single bank. However, in order to get fifty oars on a ship this size, I had to arrange them in two rows, hence the bireme configuration. Biremes varied wildly in size, from smaller than the 37-metre ship here to as long as 80 metres, especially in the case of the much later Byzantine dromons, many of which were built as biremes. This ship is meant to be used in Avalon Hill's Trireme board game, and has a 1mm hole between the mainmast and stern for placing a pin or flag to indicate what the ship is carrying. Roman pentaconters typically carry no more than a dozen soldiers, but larger biremes were rumoured to carry an entire cohort, or 500 men.
