Today, we are making some relatively modest changes to the Shapeways Privacy Statement. These changes are designed to make it even more explicit exactly which parts of your Shapeways profile will be publicly accessible.
As you may already know, we have been working hard recently to make it even easier for community members to find each other on Shapeways. If you have a Shapeways account, you’ve already seen emails about these changes and have been greeted with a notice about them when you log onto the site. This post gives a bit more background on the changes.
While some community members have well known usernames that make them easy to find, we have received feedback from you that unless you know the exact Shapeways username it can be difficult to find, follow, and engage with community members you care about. In response, there are now more ways for you to search for users on the site.
While our prior privacy statement covered that profile information, we strive to make sure that the statement is as clear as possible about what happens to information that you share with us and with the community.
As such, the privacy statement now makes it explicit that your public profile can include things like your real name, an image, and a short biography in addition to your Shapeways username. For many of our users, that information will make it easier for friends and fans to find you.
At the same time, we know that not everyone wants to share all of those things publicly. That is why the settings on your profile page always allow you to select what types of information you want to make available publicly.
If you are curious about the specific modifications of the statement, previous versions of the privacy statement are available in the privacy statement archives. As always, if you have any questions or thoughts about the change, feel free to raise them in the comments below or to me directly on twitter at @MWeinberg2D or via email at [email protected].

Normally when I receive notices of changed terms of service, these include a document that has additions in boldface and removed text either underlined or in a still-readable strikethrough markup.
Would it be possible to get something like this from shapeways – where I expect both versions of the document will be available in a format suitable for creating such a difference file – in the future, or is that just my European fastidiousness ?
Privacy statement v2 in the archive is giving a page not found error.
Can any country serve you a legal order and get a user’s private data?
What does lawful mean – lawful in the country serving you the order, or lawful in a particular country, or lawful in the user’s country of residence?
Thanks for catching that! Should be live now.
As a general rule, if we fall under a country’s jurisdiction and receive a lawful order from them we will take steps to comply. The details of how that work are going to be context specific, but we would hope that the data and/or user targeted by the order has some sort of connection to the country requesting information.
