Disappointed with the outcome of the 1926 "Norge" polar expedition,
airship commander Umberto Nobile planned an all Italian effort for 1928. This new Arctic project was endorsed by the Royal Geographical Society of Italy and sponsored by the city of Milan. Mussolini hesitatingly agreed to the scheme and the Italian Air Ministry contributed the airship, the  "N4 ITALIA". N4 was very similar to the N1 Norge but had extra useful lift and a new and enlarged Control Car. The scientific aims of the expedition were: to explore the coast of Siberia; to penetrate to the North Pole and to land there; and to explore and map the coasts of Greenland and Canada.  The starting point was the mast and shed originally used for the Norge expedition at Ny-Ålesund on the island of Spitsbergen, west of Norway . All went well up until the point of reaching the North Pole. The journey there had begun on 23 May and included a brief excursion over the coast of Greenland before arriving at the North Pole at 20 past midnight on 24 May. Stiff winds and fog prevented a landing but Nobile triumphantly fulfilled his pledges to leave various artifacts on the ice including a cross from the Pope, the national flag of Italy and the flag of the city of Milan. Then a fateful decision was made: Nobile's first instinct was to keep the wind behind them and head for Canada but he allowed himself to be persuaded to head back to base where there was still scientific work to be done.  He radioed his intentions and turned back but ITALIA was soon thrown into a battle with the elements. A fierce storm developed with headwinds retarding the airship. She began to accumulate a thick coating of snow and ice and suffered elevator damage requiring urgent makeshift repairs. At 10.30 am on 25 May the airship suddenly became heavy through a loss of gas and a moment later ITALIA hit the ice. The Control Car was torn away and parts strewn across the ice  while the envelope, engine cars and six members of the crew ballooned away, never to be seen again. An epic struggle for survival for the ten remaining crew members then began whilst the world held its breath. Triumphs and tragedies unfurled amid some of the most extensive international rescue activities ever undertaken involving many aircraft and surface vessels.
