As part of war reparations demanded by the Allies in their implementation of the Treaty of Versaille, LZ120 Bodensee was handed over to Italy on 3 July 1921. She left Friedrichshafen at 06h23 and landed at Ciampino near Rome at 19h12. The German crew stayed on for e few weeks to help train the Italian crew and on 2 September LZ120 was renamed ESPERIA. Before leaving Germany her hull had been extended by ten meters and her tail fin and rudder combinations extensively modified as depicted in this model.
