Product Description
These cradles are used on broad gauge and standard gauge flat wagons, transporting steel coils from Port Kembla to Melbourne where they get lifted by the biggest hook I've ever seen to transfer to the broad gauge trains to continue their journey to the steel works at Hastings on the Western Port Bay side of the Mornington Peninsula near Melbourne.
Coils have been transported to Hastings on RCJF skeletal wagons since the hot strip mill at Hastings was closed in 2011. Prior to this, steel slabs were transported to Hastings. The ROBX (aka ELX) wagons that were used to carry the slabs morphed into RCJF wagons by being stripped down to their skeleton frame and having extra supports added beneath the cradles.
They can be seen in a variety of colours including white, blue, yellow and dirty rusty colours.
The N scale model requires "smooth fine detail plastic" for the thin components. This plastic is brittle but the small size and support beams make it a sound structure - it is afterall a miniature of cradles intended to carry heavy coils of steel.
The cradles are jointed to a sprue to reduce manual handling which is a significant cost component in Shapeways' pricing model for these small models. Please note: I have not printed this model (either scale) but have printed the earlier N scale version that had disconnected cradles. The HO model is a simple upsizing of the N scale master.
