Jersey Railway Sentinel railcar
Pioneer 2
The first railcar built by Sentinel was Pioneer 1.Originally conceived as a smaller 2 axled railcar, but redesigned after discussions with railway, and subsequently body designed built by Cammell company.
After trials on Jersey on 1923, a second railcar(named Pioneer 2) was ordered which had modifications to fix some problems.
Pioneer 1 had an off centre boiler and chimney(not obvious from photo but on drawings).Other changes also resulted in railcar being more powerful, and therefore used more. Subsequent Sentinel railcars had boiler and chimney on centre line.
A third railcar was also introduced, thought to be the demonstration unit at Wembley exhibition , and previously tested on both LNER and LMS . Apart from regauging for the 3ft 6in linen in Jersey, little is known of this railcar.
When the railway closed in 1936 all the remaining railcars were scrapped. Pioneer had already been withdrawn in 1935.
