Product Description
This collection contains two each of the SparrowHawk-T Transport with two pods, the SparrowHawk-H Cargo Transport, and the SparrowHawk-T Transport with one pod.
The Romulans eventually felt the need for a true Light Tactical Transport that could carry pods, construction materials for base upgrades, components of a mobile base, or ground bases for deployment (something the tugs and light tactical transports of every other empire could do). They undertook to modify SparrowHawk hulls for this purpose, permanently ending the modularity for that individual ship but provided three attachment points for cargo pods, one below the hull on the centerline and two above the hull on either side (where the modules would have been placed). The Federation named it the SparrowHawk-T Transport. The ship can carry one pod at nearly fleet speeds, and two pods at a reduced but still strategically viable speed. It can never carry three pods. If carrying two pods, the pods are inert, and cannot be operational elements such as battle pods or carrier pods. The ship can carry Klingon, Romulan, or civilian 40x200 meter cylindrical pods, as well as pairs of ground bases or pod-sized items such as the components of a mobile base. This ship does have a cloaking device. It is shown on this sprue with one pod and two pods.
The Romulans used the SparrowHawk-H Cargo Transport version of the modular SparrowHawk war cruiser when they needed a supply ship capable of military speeds, perhaps to accompany a fast-moving fleet or needed to bring supplies to a critical installation. The ship carries cargo in expandable modules that take the place of the usual modules on a SparrowHawk. The ship cannot carry pods, but Romulan logistics (at the start of the General War) were based more on Freight Eagle pallets and standard civilian cargo ships of all types. This did create a serious limit in that a SparrowHawk-H could not carry ground bases for emergency deployment, elements of a mobile base, or parts to upgrade a base of any type to the next larger size. These missions were left to the one overworked KRT tug and slow-moving freighters. The SparrowHawk-H does have a cloaking device.
This sprue of unpainted ships is designed to fit on a typical 5/8-inch hex map or to allow more room on a larger hex map. (If used for A Call to Arms: Star Fleet, simply change the measurements from inches to centimeters.) Smooth Fine Detail Plastic makes an excellent cloaked ship!
