Product Description
In the mid 1950s British Railways launched a modernisation plan which encouraged fast (up to 60mph), vacuum braked, block trains (common cargo and destination) running between distant terminals. In 1957 Charles Roberts Ltd. launched a 35 ton (gross loaded weight), vacuum braked tank wagon design. Customers included the ESSO, Texaco, Gulf and Regent petroleum companies. Two versions were built, Class A for highly inflammable spirits such as petrol, and Class B for heavier oils such as fuel oil and bitumen.
In later life, some of the Class B tankers were used for loads such as molasses, creosote and water for weed-killing trains. From 1975 onwards, 150 new MTV/Zander ballast wagons were built using the chasses of ex-ESSO 35T tanks.
This product comprises two complete 23' 8.5" Over Headstocks, 15' Wheelbase, Vacuum Braked chassis for 35 ton Class A or B tank wagons.
A kit consisting of these chasses along with tank ends, fittings and ladders is available separately.
If the wheelsets are at all difficult to insert, use a V-shaped file to deepen the guide grooves that lead from the bottom of the W-irons to the axle cups.
Preparation and finishing Fine Detail Plastics is described here.
