NER D223 Motor Third
Part of the NER fleet of electric passenger trains for Tyneside. Initially introduced in 1904.
One of the replacement coaches introduced in 1920 to replace the stock destroyed in depot fire. Design based on improved versions of original stock but with semi eliptical roof instead of clerestory roof.
These were rebuilt in 1938 to run on newly electrified South Shields line, and some survived into 1950swhen they were replaced by Eastleigh built EMU stock.
