The Armed or Naval Trawler is a concept for expeditiously converting a nation's fishing boats and fishermen to military assets. During WW1 and WW2 the UK in particular used trawlers extensively to maintain control of seaward approaches to major harbors. No one knew the waters as well as local fishermen, and the trawler was the ship type these men understood and could operate effectively without further instruction.  They were particularly suited for many naval requirements because they were robust boats designed to work heavy trawls in all types of weather and had large clear working decks. A mine sweeper could be created simply by replacing the trawl with a mine sweep. Adding depth charge racks on the deck, ASDIC (later called SONAR) below, and a 3-inch (76 mm) or 4-inch (102 mm) gun equipped the trawler for anti-submarine duties. The RNAS's introduction of submarine scout (SS) airships  in 1915 provided long range reconnaisance for the anti-submarine fleet whereby an armed trawler could be called up by radio and directed  to a sighting for dropping depth charges.  By 1917 and with the introduction of the SS Zero,  this combination had become extremely effective and U-Boat activity in coastal waters and the North Sea was very much reduced.

The Royal Navy maintained a small inventory of trawlers in peacetime, but requisitioned much larger numbers of civilian trawlers in wartime. It also ordered many naval trawlers built to Admiralty specifications. Shipyards that were used to building fishing trawlers could easily switch to constructing naval versions. As a bonus, the Admiralty could sell these trawlers to commercial fishing interests when the wars ended.
