The Type 10 Shuttle, also nicknamed "Chaffee", was a shuttle carried onboard of Defiant Class starships. The length of 9.64m is taken from the Star Trek Deep Space 9 Technical Manual (DS9 TM). At this size the shuttle perfectly fits through the Defiants shuttlebay door on the bottom, as the Defiant is listed with a length of 170m in this book. This way the shuttle is also big enough, to allow a human to stand upright inside and be able to get through the hatch at the aft relatively easy, with only having to duck his head a bit. However, a lot of screen evidence is also pointing to the fact, that the Defiant could also be much smaller at about 120m. At this size the shuttle needs to be at most 6.5m long to fit trough the shuttlebay doors and so is ex-astris-scientia.org listing it with this length. But then a human would only be able to enter it, if he crawls on all fours. Inside, he even could hardly stand crouched.
The magazine from "The Official Starships Collection" seems to make a compromise here and gives the length as 7.9m. But this would neither allow it to fit through the shuttlebay doors of a 120m Defiant, nor allow a human to enter the shuttle comfortably, as he still needs to almost crawl through the hatch at the back. So i stick to the figure from the DS9 TM here.
