Portland was the leader of the class improved from the Northampton design. Only 10 ft. longer, they can be distinguished from the older class by the deckhouse/mainmast area.
"Sweat Pea" was commissioned in 1933 and retired 1946 after earning 16 battle stars throughout her career. She was selected for Operation Magic Carpet: bringing back home American G.I.s from the theatres. She was held in reserve until she was scrapped in 1959.
