KM CA Prinz Eugen [early 1942]
- improved upon the preceeding 2 Adm. Hipper class heavy cruisers, noteably the bow, armor layout amidships, aircraft handling facilities (and crane) and flatter forward superstructure face
- part of Operation Rheinübung (1941) with battleship Bismarck in breaking out to the Atlantic Ocean, w/c lead to HMS Hood's sinking
- in 1942 as part of Operation Cerberus with Scharnhorst and Gneisanau (+ escorts): the German fleet's (successful) attempt to return to Germany from occupied France (Brest), running past the British blockade in the English Channel
- 1943-1944 operated as artillery support vs Russia in the Baltics
- at Germany's surrender, Prinz Eugen was ceeded to the British, and then as war prize to the US. Assigned the hull number IX-300, the cruiser was used as a target ship for nuclear bomb tests
