The IS-4 was designed beginning in 1945 as a competitor to the IS-3 for the purpose of eventually replacing the IS-2. The two different designs went in different directions, but they both shared improved armour on the hull and turret, including sloped sides near the suspension, as well as a single elongated turret hatch. The IS-4, however, was larger than the IS-2 and kept the same overall shape to both the hull and turret. The IS-4 took much longer to develop than the IS-3, and did not enter production until 1947. Unfortunately for this design, it had no significant advantage over the IS-2, and was cancelled in 1949 after about 250 were built.
