Product Description
This product page sells sets of Pullman sections with decorative Ionic column-style berth armrests.  Sets of Pullman sections with rounded Art Deco-style berth armrests can be found on their own separate product page via our main Shapeways store page.

This product is available in three sprue sizes, which can be selected from the menu to the right.  The "small" size includes parts for 8 Pullman sections; the "medium" size includes parts for 12 Pullman sections; the "large" size includes parts for 16 Pullman sections.  A small hobby blade and a file or sanding stick will be required to separate parts from their sprues and to clean up the edges.

- - -

These HO Pullman open section berths and bunks have been painstakingly modeled to scale from a plethora of sources to replicate every curve and decorative flourish of the real things.  The comfy cushions and Pullman-standardized trims of these furnishings will compliment custom interior work with the level of finish that it deserves.

(Looking for additional authentic Pullman furniture...?  Sets of Pullman drawing room and compartment fixtures are sold on their own pages!)

MODEL FEATURES AND INSTALLATION

The parts provided to assemble each section include two facing berth seats, an overhead bunk with bedding, and a floor-mounted radiator.  Four of the berth seats are single-sided and are designed to be mounted against bulkhead walls-- the remainder are double-sided and are designed to create a series of sections in their iconic rows.  Bulkheads between each section are not included-- however, the berths are designed with slots to accommodate modeler-supplied plastic sheet up to 0.020" thick for this purpose.

Heavyweight Pullman sleeping cars had a radiator that ran along each interior side wall.  The separate radiator pieces included in the Kadwell set are designed to be mounted between, and under, each pair of facing berth seats.  Each berth piece also includes its own section of attached radiator-- when combined, an assembled row of sections will form a "continuous" radiator along  the base of its wall.  For those who would prefer not to use the included radiators for any reason (e.g., model wall shape interference), the radiator sections attached to each berth seat are designed for easy removal.

Upper bunks are provided with an equal number of left- and right-oriented bed settings.  It's recommended to orient these bunks so that all of the bed settings face towards one end of the car.  Each bunk has a lip along the side facing the wall which will orient the bunk to the correct angle to represent its closed position, but bunks can be modeled in an open position if preferred.  (With the roof of a car removed, the bedding will be visible either way.)

A WORD ABOUT STYLE...

As alluded to in the header, K. Kadwell offers sets of Pullman berths in two distinct styles: a version with round, streamlined Art Deco-looking berth arm rests (as sold on their own separate page in our Shapeways store), and a version with blockier, but more ornate, Ionic column-fashioned berth arm rests (as sold on this page).  As far as we can tell, the "Art Deco"-style armrests were introduced in 1910 and were based on similarly-shaped seating used even earlier; the "Ionic"-style armrests seem to have been introduced around 1929.  We can't quite guarantee these dates, and of course, cars may have had seats updated in later years.  Both styles are iconic to Pullman's heavyweight era and both were still well represented when the cars were being retired-- take a look at interior photographs of prototype cars if you're unsure of which version to use!
