Product Description
NOTE: TWO purchases are required to complete the M Class model
This is the Control Car and Tail Fin set as shown in red in the first image above. Available in either 1:700 or 1:600 scale.
Complete the model by purchasing the US Navy M Class Envelope in nylon.

Decals are available on my CLASSIC AIRSHIPS website HERE.  Sheet CA007 has markings suitable for the M Class in both 1:700 and 1:600 scales.

The M Class were the largest and undoubtedly the most efficient non-rigids built during WW2. They were unique amongst US  designs in that the Control Car consisted of three sections that could flex with the envelope. It carried the load over a greater length than the shorter, two level designs of other non-rigid classes and minimised the possibility of wrinkles in the envelope. Twenty-two were ordered initially, but eighteen were later cancelled as it became apparent by 1944 that the war against the submarine menace from Germany and Japan, had largely been won. Four were built, the model is of M1 and M3, and trials with them  included carrying a Piper Cub airplane for stand-off weapons test.
The M-Class, nicknamed "Mikes",  quickly   becam a favourite with crews: they were roomy, comfortable and  unusually quiet for the men in the forward section.  Plus, with their eight depth bombs and  .50 calibre machine gun they carried a hefty punch.  Across the four aircraft delivered, the M Class were the first to study retractable tricycle landing gear, first to carry a very large radar antenna, and first to act in the AWACS role. They were still flying when the nuclear submarine appeared and carried equipmlent to track the sub's heat trail.
