Product Description
The 1950s British Railways modernisation plan, encouraging fast (up to 60mph) vacuum-braked block (common cargo and destination) trains, led to the introduction of vacuum braked 35T tanks in the late 1950s and was boosted by track upgrades permitting axle loads of 22.5 tons in the 1960s.
In 1963 Charles Roberts Ltd. launched a 45 ton gross loaded weight, vacuum (and later, air) braked monobloc tank wagon design. Several versions were built, Class A for highly inflammable spirits such as petrol, Class B for heavier oils such as fuel oil or bitumen, and also LPG versions for liquified petroleum gas. Customers included the Shell, BP, ESSO, Texaco, Gulf and Regent petroleum companies, and by 1968 Shell-Mex BP alone was operating almost 4000 of these wagons.
This product comprises one (choose SMALL) or two (choose MEDIUM) complete 25' 8" Over Headstocks, 15' Wheelbase chassis for 45 ton Class A, B or liquified gas petroleum tank wagons.
If the wheelsets are at all difficult to insert, use a V-shaped file to deepen the guide grooves that lead from the bottom of the W-irons to the axle cups. Versatile Plastic versions will cope with more bending than Fine Detail Plastic.
A choice of materials is offered, including resilient (but coarse) Versatile Plastic or (rather more brittle) Fine Detail Plastic.
White Versatile Plastic versions should be washed in warm soapy water then receive three coats of matt black primer, lightly rubbed down between coats.
Preparation and finishing Fine Detail Plastics is described here.
Similar chassis were used under various chemical tank wagons, ususally with a narrower barrel. You might consider employing this chassis with my 35T Tank Wagon Fittings and 22mm diameter barrels.
