After the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, the Terok Nor station, an old ore refinery, was taken over by the Bajorans and put under Federation command. The station was renamed Deep Space Nine. A similar station, called Empok Nor, was also abandonned by the Cardassians and used to get some spare parts in one episode of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine". The station was originally designed to be at a diameter of 3600 feet (ca. 1097 m). However, it was shown much larger, especially in later seasons. The figure given by the DS9:TM is a good compromise. This way the station fits well to the 170m Defiant i have in my store.
