Product Description
Tholians are a crystalline species that once ruled the M81 Galaxy. When the Tholian Will was overthrown by the Seltorians, some small groups of Tholians fled to other galaxies. One small group of Tholians reached the Milky Way, where they took over the easternmost part of Klingon space, the part that originally bordered the Romulans. They called this the Tholian Holdfast. The Tholians (who considered carbon-based life to be lower than bacteria) enslaved Klingon colonies in the region and kept the Klingons at bay by their (at the time) superior technology. Their foes, the Seltorians, arrived in the Milky Way Galaxy later.
The Tholians saw fighter technology as a way to strengthen their ships and provide a cheaper means to absorb enemy firepower in battle, but they had a problem. Their ships were small and lacked any internal volume to support fighter bays. Their solution (possible only because of their own hot-crystal biology) was to dock the fighters outside the ship, servicing them by remote systems. Pilots could reach their fighters (when not using remote control) by aligned docking hatches.
The Tholians, like almost all other empires, sought to provide their police units (which handled some local patrol and security missions and kept smugglers out of Tholian space) increased fire power and created a carrier version of their police cutter. In this case, they added four fighters in external bays. There were few of these ships, but each police district had one to provide some extra firepower and patrol ability. When smugglers were thought to be hiding in an asteroid belt, the police carrier with its four Spider fighters could search the area five times as fast as a single police cutter.
The ship is available in a variety of materials. Ships are unpainted, use standard flight stands available from many sources, and, while designed for gaming, make fine display pieces.
