Tholians are a crystalline species that once ruled the M81 Galaxy. When the Tholian Will was overthrown by the Seltorians, some small groups of Tholians fled to other galaxies. One small group of Tholians reached the Milky Way, where they took over the easternmost part of Klingon space, the part that originally bordered the Romulans. They called this the Tholian Holdfast. The Tholians (who considered carbon-based life to be lower than bacteria) enslaved Klingon colonies in the region and kept the Klingons at bay by their (at the time) superior technology. Their foes, the Seltorians, arrived in the Milky Way Galaxy later.
The Tholians had a problem in that the largest ship they could build was a patrol corvette, so all larger ships were put together from multiple patrol corvette hulls. The war cruiser was composed of about one and a half patrol corvettes assembled in a single column, which made it easier to balance the warp drive units for centerline thrust. The ship had most of the firepower of the ungainly Tholian heavy cruiser but could be built for far less. This ship became the most common Tholian cruiser of the General War.
While the first pinwheel constructed (in the heat of battle) was by patrol corvettes, a pinwheel can be built out of three war cruisers. Because war cruisers are so much bigger than a destroyer or patrol corvette, the tactic of forming a pinwheel assumed an offensive nature rather than being a desperate defensive measure. Three war cruisers (of any type of variant including scout, carrier, commando, or combat types armed with disruptors or photons) could move into a disputed locality and form an “instant base” which would be very difficult for the enemy to remove. This group of three war cruisers includes a connector so you can create your own pinwheel if desired.
While police cutters, destroyers, and patrol corvettes can form their own pinwheels, they cannot be mixed with patrol corvettes or destroyers to make pinwheels.
The Tholian war cruiser is also available
singly or as a
one-piece pinwheel.
The ship is available in a variety of materials. Ships are unpainted, use standard flight stands available from many sources, and, while designed for gaming, make fine display pieces.
