The USS Dauntless was an alien ship disguised as a Federation vessel trough particle synthesis. It was part of an elaborate trap, conceived by the alien Arturis to get the crew of USS Voyager assimilated by the Borg. His entire species was assimilated, and he blamed Voyager to be responsible for it, so he was out for revenge. The particle synthesis not only changed the outer appearance, but also the internal configuration to look like a convincing Federation design. When the ship shifted back to its original form, the outer shape basically stayed the same. Only the color changed to a brownish red tone.
