Product Description
This unit is from the original Star Fleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph. He described it as Star Fleet Headquarters (indicating there was only one of them). ADB needed a starbase design and expanded on the diagram to create it as will be seen in another miniature.
The six pods on the outside ring of the HQ are hollow with doors on the top and bottom; they are each able to dock three heavy cruisers or various combinations of smaller and larger ships (e.g., five frigates, or one dreadnought, one cruiser, and two smaller ships). Traditionally, one pod is used for repairs of damaged ships and a second for construction of new ships, leaving the other four for temporary docking of ships temporarily assigned, part of the Home Fleet, or visiting briefly.
The central disk structure houses the offices, machine shops, production facilities, repair facilities, construction facilities, and storage for the fleet's main base. Star Fleet HQ also includes the space-borne campus of Star Fleet Academy. (Cadets destined to be officers of the unrestricted line spend two years at the surface facility in San Francisco and two more years at the space-borne campus. Those destined to be doctors, lawyers, accountants, and other such specialties spend only one year at each campus, plus graduation from an accredited university.)
This is the official Franz Joseph design offered by ADB, Inc. under its contract with Franz Joseph Designs. The small Starbase is about 2”; the medium Starbase is about 3”; the large Starbase is about 4”.
The ship is available in a variety of materials. Ships are unpainted, use standard flight stands available from many sources, and, while designed for gaming, make fine display pieces.
