The train commenced service on 30 September 1935, travelling between London King's Cross and Newcastle.
The train was made in the year of King George V's Silver Jubilee, and was painted silver throughout. It was initially composed of two twin-set articulated coaches, and one triplet-set; seven coaches in all.
In 1938 an addition 3rd class coach was added to one of the twin-sets, resulting in a triplet-set.

In BR days valancing was removed and twins and triplets were used in other train formations.
