This  model represents a US Navy 12-pounder, long-gun cannon, derived from the Royal Navy, Blomefield 1790, long-pattern (9 feet long), 12-pounder cannon weighing 1.9 tons (1714 kg).   Unlike its Royal Navy counterpart, the US Navy gun does not have a recoil rope ring.

Like other War of 1812-era sloops and brigs, the US Brig Niagara is believed to have carried two 12-pounder cannons.

Although there were minor variations among real cannons, this model's scaled dimensions and details match dimensions from tables published in "British Smooth-bore Artillery: a Technological Study to Support Identification, Acquisition, Restoration, Reproduction, and Interpretation of Artillery at National Historic Parks in Canada" by David McConnell.  Its details were matched to those of surviving cannon.
