John Eaves' first concept of the Constitution class for Star Trek Discovery was quite different from the ship that ended up on screen. It was much closer to the original TOS Enterprise that one might think, also.
Aside from the drastically changed proportions, which makes the ship much squatter and meaner than even the Discovery Enterprise from the show, the detailing and many parts of it more closely resemble the original design. The phasers and torpedo tubes are only placed on the saucer bottom, close to the sensor dome, as it could be seen in TOS; the pylons have a very slight angle inward from a side view, and they are thicker than the TOS'; the nacelle end caps are rotated 90° to the sides inwards, instead of pointing downwards, but the overall detailing on the nacelles is more blended and less pronounced compared to the screen Discoprise. The impulse engines are also a little smaller, and the bridge is more streamlined and blended into the hull. The primary hull itself looks more organic and flows better, compared to both TOS and DIS versions, having a more aggressive look to it, it has been smoothed out by making the curves more gentle. The neck is slightly more inclined forward, while the secondary hull is longer and apparently a little larger than the TOS' one compared to the saucer section. The overall proportions and slight changes make the design more compact and more aggressive than the Discovery Enterprise from the show, and it was this same first concept which was used as a base for the wireframe of the ISS Defiant shown in Ep. 10 of Season 1.
