Product Description
USS Bennington (CV-20) was one of 24 Essex class fleet carriers built by the US Navy during and immediately after WWII. The ship entered service in December 1944, joining TF 58 in the Pacific for the Mariana Islands, Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns; she was one of the carriers to launch strikes that sank the battleship Yamato in April 1945.
The ship was not present at the signing of the Japanese surrender, but entered Tokyo Bay a week later, being deployed there until November; at that time she was recalled home to be placed in reserve. Only in 1950 did the ship receive her SCB-27A modernization, returning to service in October 1952, but once again was drydocked in 1954 due to damage from aviation oil fumes, receiving SCB-125 modernization at the same time. Returned to service, Bennington was reclassified as CVS (anti-submarine warfare carrier) in 1959 and was stationed in the Far East.
During the Vietnam War, the ship was deployed from 1964 to 1967.
In Juanuary 1970 Bennington was finally decommissioned and put in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, until sold for scrap in 1994.
