Undecavertol (4-methyldec-3-en-5-ol). The Undecavertol story began on May 29th, 1978, in Uster, Switzerland, in the garden of Roman Kaiser, where between 9:00–11:00 AM he carried out a headspace experiment with ca. 30 lily-of-the-valley inflorescences (Convallaria majalis L.) in search of important but yet missed trace constituents. The GC/MS spectrum of one intense and interesting green-floral (Fr. "vert") smelling peak indicated a C11 (hence "undeca-(ne)") alcohol (hence "-ol"). An m/z 99 fragment was tentatively assigned to a methylpentenylidene oxonium radical ion, and motivated the synthesis of several C11 pentanyl pentenyl carbinols, together with Dietmar Lamparsky. While this did not lead to the identification of the unknown peak, an amazing new and versatile green-floral odorant was discovered: Undeca-vert-ol.
Undecavertol is an exceptionally strong green-floral powerhouse, recalling lily-of-the-valley leaves with natural, fresh-fruity kiwi, violet and linden-blossom aspects. It took a while to get established in the world of perfumery, and Undecavertol was first used in rose and fruity pear accords only. Overdoses of 2.3% Undecavertol in the tuberose theme of 'Michael' (Michael Kors, 2000) by Alain Alchenberger and Laurent Le Guernec, and of course the 7.7% Undecavertol that Maurice Roucel put in 'Be Delicious' (DKNY, 2004) to create with Cassis Base 345 B a green apple for New York made Undecavertol unforgettable and become the universal byword for fresh-floral greenery. The use restrictions on 'methyl heptyne carboxylate' (MHC) of course also helped Undecavertol in becoming the indispenable basic green tone on the perfumer's palette.
The pendant features Undecavertol the way that Roman Kaiser and Dietmar Lamparsky drew it, i.e. paying tribute to (3E)-4,8-dimethylnona-1,3,7-triene as underlying terpenoid reference. The dimensions of the Undecavertol pendant are ca. 3.3 cm × 2.5 cm × 1.1 cm, and the hole for the necklace (not included) has a diameter of ca. 3.0 mm. It thus fits easily to a great variety of necklaces but looks especially stunning on gold or rose gold plated Thomas Sabo Charm Club 'Glam & Soul' necklaces, www.thomassabo.com.
