Irregularly regular, random yet organized, Voronoi tessellations are reminiscent of some patterns seen in nature: the coat pattern of a giraffe, the cracks on a bed of drying mud, the boundaries formed among soap bubbles.
This design thus combines nature and mathematics.
In mathematics, a Voronoi diagram is a partitioning of a plane into cellular regions based on distance to points in a specific subset of the plane. The set of points is specified beforehand, and for each seed there is a corresponding region consisting of all points closer to that seed than to any other. These regions are called Voronoi cells. They are created by taking pairs of points that are close together and drawing a line that is equidistant between them and perpendicular to the line connecting them. That is, all points on the lines in the diagram are equidistant to the nearest two (or more) source points.
It is named after Georgy Voronoy, and is also called a Voronoi tessellation, or a Dirichlet tessellation (after Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet). Voronoi diagrams have practical and theoretical applications in many fields, especially science and technology.
