Product Description
Tetrahymena thermophila is a single-celled, ciliated protozoan that lives in freshwater streams and lakes. Because it possesses two distinct nuclei, a smaller one that directs sexual reproduction and a larger one responsible for somatic growth, it is an interesting model organism for molecular biology. Tetrahymena can be easily genetically manipulated by transformation and gene knock-outs and thus is used extensively to determine gene function. Tetrahymena move with the aid of hundreds of cilia on their cell surface.
