Product Description
The Baby Robot Piston Adapter allows you to use a Cafelat Robot piston seal with your Baby Faemina. The Baby Robot Piston Adapter clips onto the bottom of your Baby Faemina piston once you have removed the original piston seal. You will need to buy a Robot piston seal from Cafelat.

The Baby Robot Piston Adapter is made from a non-toxic nylon that is heat proof to 163C/325F. Unfortunately it is porous and not rated food safe as it is felt that bacteria can grow within the internal spaces. However, the adapter needs to be coated in food grade silicone grease (Dow 111) to make it hydrophobic, so this should ameliorate any nasties getting into the nylon. Coffee is also known to have antibacterial and antimicrobial properties so this should also keep things from taking hold in the first place. If you have any concerns do not buy the adapter.

As I said, you will need to coat the entire external surface, including inside the recess for the shower screen handle on the face of the piston, as well as the corners of the piston seal recess with a food grade silicone grease - I used Dow 111. I also used a cotton bud/Q Tip to get into all the tricky little corners. Put enough on to coat the surface and then rub it in. Just think that you are trying to fill in all the pores on the surface. You shouldn’t have any globs when you finish and the surface should be tacky but not sticky if that makes sense!

If you don’t coat the surface, the water under pressure will pass through the adapter and spill out over the top of the basket as well as fill in the hollow centre of the adapter and you won’t have very good pressure. I know because I tried it!

I did mine about a month ago and it now feels dry so I assume that’s how it will go, though I’m also assuming it will need to be regreased sometime in the future. We’ll see. In the meantime, I’m making very good espressos with a machine that until recently was not in working order.

Here is a video I made using the prototype of the piston seal adapter and naked portafilter;
