Product Description
Designed as an enlarged development of the Colorado class superdreadnought, the South Dakota class comprised six ships (South Dakota, Indiana, Montana, North Carolina, Iowa, Massachusetts) to be laid down starting from 1920.
The vessels would have a slightly increased top speed of 23 knots, compared to the previous 21 knots for the rest of the standard battleships, with twelve 16''/50 guns (not the same 16'' of the Colorados, they were 45 calibres long) in four triple turrets; sixteen single 6'' guns in open mounts were placed in superstructure casemates, with 3'' AA guns on the upper works and two submerged torpedo tubes.
While on paper very powerful vessels, they indeed compared well with their Japanese counterparts (the Tosa and Kii classes), but looking not so good against the 18'' guns of the N.13 class; however, their biggest problem comes when compared with the G3 and N3 designs. The latter has a similar top speed, considerably heavier armament and better protection; even the so-called G3 battle cruisers, at this point truly fast battleships in all but name, would have the same main guns but with one less turret, comparable protection and massively higher top speed.
The six battleships were all laid down in 1920-21, but were all suspended the following year to the armament limitation talks in Washington. The first five ships were each around 30-40% complete, with the last only 11%. They were all sold for scrap in late 1923, their names reused in future classes of battleships of the USN.
