Product Description
Comparatively early, rivetted version of the steel bodied 16T mineral wagon. Set of four wagons covering combinations of pressed steel and fabricated end doors, and fabricated and pressed side doors. On the real wagons, end doors and side doors were interchangeable between wagons of this and other 16T, 21T and 24T mineral wagon diagrams when repairs were needed, so any combination is reasonable and many different ones can be found in photographs. These four bodies are designed to fit on a slightly shortened Peco 9ft wheelbase steel solebar chassis kit. File grooves in the the bufferbeam for the stanchions at the non-opening end, shorten the solebars as mentioned, and remove some of the upper flange from the solebar to accept the bottom of the door and little bits from the lower flange to take the ends of the stanchions beside the side doors and at the opening end. Take care with the fit to the body after assembling the chassis to avoid breaking the ends of the stanchions. Make the chassis a good enough fit and you may not need to glue it to the body for it to stay on during gentle handling. Clean the body carefully to get a good paint finish, and remove the internal braces (which only need to be there to prevent the thin sides from warping during manufacture) using gentle strokes in the corners with a sharp scalpel.
UPDATED MODEL with improved detail in the channel above the end door. These wagons were built to an LNER design with pressed doors all round, which were prone to distortion by the load and were often replaced.
CHASSIS OPTION see my 3D printed 9' wb 16'6" OHS chassis for an alternative to shortening the Peco kit.
