Product Description
Soviet light cruiser project MLK-130-10 was part of a series of design drafts in 1940-41 to create a new cruiser class of similar size and purpose to the British Didos and American Atlantas.
The six designs implemented either 130mm or 152mm guns, in four and two different layouts, respectively. The designs with 130mm guns would have either 8, 10, or 12 of them in 4, 5 or 6 twin turrets respectively, and the last one would have had 16 guns in four quadruple turrets, in a unique configuration with two upper and two lower guns, instead of all four on the same level. The designation MLK-130-10 indicates it is the light cruiser design with 130mm guns, with 10 of them, in five twin turrets.
In keeping with tradition of naming Soviet cruisers after historical figures of the Soviet Union, the ship was given the name Щербаков (Shcherbakov) after the party leader of Moscow during WWII.
A number of small alterations have been made to the original design.
The original MLK-130-10 had three screws, though this is unprecedented for Soviet cruisers, even more so since larger ships (of which a number were actually built) with more powerful engines had one less; since the design, had it been built, would not have been completed before the end of the war, the main armament was revised with SM-2-1 mountings instead of the original BL-110s, but keeping the same guns in the same layout; the 45mm BL-120 quad mounts have been dropped altogether, on the grounds they were too heavy for such a small vessel, and instead replaced by 25mm/79 2M-3 twin mounts; a slight revision of the central part of the superstructure was necessary to permit full traverse of the quintuple torpedo tubes; and the unspecified fire control system was upgraded with SPN-500 fire control directors for the main battery.
