Product Description
The Worcester class was drawn up towards the end of the Second World War as a further development of the wartime classes, visually resulting in something akin to a Cleveland class hull with an Atlanta style layout for the main battery. Departing from almost two decades' practice, the 6'' guns (essentially taken straight from the Clevelands and Brooklyns) were put into a new twin mounting with better shell handling characteristics and high angle elevations of +78°, making it finally a true dual purpose gun of the calibre alongside the British 6''/50 (previous attempts were dogged by poor rate of fire and/or slow tracking capabilities).
The twelve guns previously located in four triple turrets were rearranged in six twin mounts, all on the centreline, three at the bow and three at the stern, with #1, 2, 5 and 6 on the main deck level, and #3 and #4 superfiring over #2 and #5, respectively. The ships also carried the new automatic 3''/50 AA guns in place of the 40 mm Bofors (the 20 mm had already begun to be phased out in the last months of the war given the relative lack of stopping power against Special Attack aircraft compared to the bigger Bofors).
Four ships were ordered, Worcester, Roanoke, Vallejo and Gary; of these only the first two would be completed, being laid down in early 1945 they were finished well after the conflict for which they were designed for had ended. Vallejo was also laid down in July 1945, but was cancelled in December of the same year, while the last ship was also cancelled in August before assembling began.
Worcester and Roanoke had fairly uneventful careers, the former providing anti aircraft and fire support duties during the Korean War, while the latter operated mainly in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Both were decommissioned at the end of the 1950s and sold for scrap between the 1960s and 70s.
