A clef is a musical symbol used to indicate the pitch of written notes. The G clef or violin clef is an important one because it is used for a great many instruments and pitches of the voice.

The clef is placed at the beginning of the stave in such a way that the line with the G note passes through its curl and in this design also through the button with the "G" at the end of the curl.
