Product Description
Compatible with Trumpeter 1/72 Maus (keying added to allow easy and correct placement of the casemate instead of the turret).
The 15/17 cm Sturmgeschutz auf Mausfahrzeug was a late-war concept for a tank destroyer version of the famous (or infamous) Maus tank, already mounting the massive 12.8 cm gun which also equipped the Jagdtiger. Only rough proposals were made for this "Stug Maus", and no sketches or mock-ups survived the war.
It was proposed to have either a 15 cm L/63 or 17 cm L/53 gun in a fixed casemate, with the caveat that it would have had to be kept within the size of the Maus turret, which already stretched the limit the size of rail-transportable AFVs (mainly due to height problems in tunnels).
Sketches were actually made (of which a few survived) for the mounting of the 15 cm L/63 on the E-100 chassis, so they can give an insight at what the Sturmgeschutz auf Mausfahrzeug could have potentially looked like. The casemate would have in all likelyhood be placed at the rear of the hull, as this required the least amount of changes to the Maus chassis to take a bigger gun in a fixed position; armour would have been at least equal, if not superior, to the Maus' turret face (220 mm), sloped at either 15° or 30° (likely depending on the gun mounted). Sides were probably 150 mm at 30° as on the Maus. The top and rear of the casemate would have been very similar to the Jagdtiger, with a large two-piece door-hatch in the back, a commander's cupola in the middle of the roof, on the right hand side, with a periscope in front of it, a rotating gunner's sight on the forward left hand side, and multiple vents to extract the fumes from the fighting compartment.
When development of the Maus was cut in late 1944 this proposal was dropped as well, since it was definitely not advanced enough to seriously take into consideration.
