Internal USB A Plug Cover

This item will fit snugly into a USB A plug and thereby protect it from accumulating debris.

The end cap has the same cross-section as the outside of the USB plug, and thus will not prevent the covered plug from retracting into a thumb drive.  There is a small chamfer on the inside of the end cap, making it easy to extract the item from a USB plug using fingernails.

Fitment: The mechanical tolerances required for USB are somewhat stricter than the accuracy guaranteed by Shapeways.  To account for this, the contact bulge is nominally slightly larger than ideal.  If the required insertion force exceeds 2lbs, then we recommend wet-sanding the bulge with 220 grit sandpaper on a flat surface until the insertion force is between 1 and 2lbs.  Based on the MDS, the tensile strength of the part is approximately 150lbs.

Electrostatic Discharge: We are not equipt to measure the possible accumulation of static electricity on the item.  But PA2200 is slightly conductive, and therefore at least somewhat static resistant.  Furthermore, regular use on multiple different thumb drives has not surfaced any issues with ESD.  Nonetheless, we recommend applying an anti-static coating to the item before it is used with any mission-critical equipment.
