The MP40 have been developped by Heinrich Hellmer, from Erma Werke, it's a simpliest version of the MP38. Chambered in 9x19mm Parrabellum, this gun was issued principaly to squad/platoon leader, tank crew, and paratroopers on Eastern and Western front. The MP40 was extensively used by Axis power during World War II.
The MP40 was a standard infantryman weapon with the
Mauser Kar98K, later experience in urban battle against Russian assault unit equipped with submachine gun outgunning their German counterpart, lead to issued the MP40 to assault platoon on limited basis. At the end of the war, the MP40 was replaced by the StG 44.
Approximatly 1.1 million MP40 were produced during World War II.
