The Tornado was developed in paralel with the Hawker Typhoon as a next generation fighter to be a replacement for the Hurricane. The initial prototypes were ordered in 1938 and first flew in 1939 using the Rolls-Royce Vulture engine (a pair of linked Merlins) that was also used in the ill-fated Avro Manchester. The design was reasonably succesful with the Vulture giving far fewer problems than it did in the Manchester but production was cancelled in 1941 when Rolls-Royce abandoned development of the Vulture in favour of more powerful versions of the (simpler) Merlin and Griffon engines.
The spherical depression under the model is for mounting it on a 4.5mm BB.
